CADEC--Micromechanics. Unidirectional. Hygrothermal Properties

Hygrothermal properties include the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and the coefficient of moisture expansion (CME). While thermal expansion is well known, moisture expansion is not. Moisture expansion occurs when the polymer matrix absorbs moisture. The water molecules invade some of the free volume in the polymer. The polymer then tries to go back to equilibrium, trying to recover its free volume, and for that it swells or expands. Currently, CADEC computes these properties using the Halpin-Tsai method.
