Micromechanics-Unidirectional-Transverse Modulus-Stress Partitioning

The modulus in direction perpendicular to the fibers is called transverse modulus. The stress partitioning parameter (SPP) method is a semi-empirical micromechanics formula, where an empirical parameter, the stress partitioning parameter, is used to increase the accuracy of the formula. SPP does not have provision for transversely isotropic (carbon) fibers and the parameter needs to be readjusted for each new material, so it is not convenient. Besides, SPP has been rendered obsolete by PMM, the later being able to compute the transverse modulus accurately for any type of fibers, including carbon fibers, and not requiring any adjustment. SPP is included in CADEC for didactic teaching purposes, illustrating the semi-empirical approach. Comparison of model predictions to experimental data and to theoretical upper and lower bounds is presented in the textbook.
